Adolf H., a young man living on the margins of Viennese society, gets by selling his painting while he seeks to find his true calling. He is befriended by another young man from a successful bourgeois Viennese family, Hugo. Hugo goes to Freud for analysis, complaining of an uncontrollable feeling of revulsion towards Jews even though he consciously rejects anti-Semitism. Adolf becomes more and more influenced by the local anti-Semitism. Hugo no longer feels driven by the same passions, while Adolf now defines his life through them and leaves Vienna for Munich.
